sharing from Nyam's CO works

Sharing from Nyam

Hi, best regards to SEAPCP participants graduated in year 2008.

How‘s thing going on?

Nearly half a year graduated from SEAPCP course, I’m sure you all had have lots of experiences on your Community Organizing work, is it right?

Within the period, from what I read via blog created by Mr. Jo Hann, I feel that you all are doing well in your CO works. Anywhere, I do not lose as well. Haha. Although I seldom chat via email or blog, but I am still doing my job and care about my brothers and sisters around the South East Asia countries.

Before I share on my CO works, I would like to share the political situation in Malaysia recently.

Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Abdullah Badawi handed over power to Dato’ Seri Najib Abdul Razak on 3rd April 2009. The day of PM Najib swore in as the sixth Malaysian prime minister, he announced the release of 13 ISA (Internal Security Act – which allows detention without trial) detainees. On 8th May, 13 more ISA detainees were released by new Home Affair Minister Dato’ Hishammudin Hussein. Yesterday (11th May 2009), the Kuala Lumpur High Court ruled that BN’s (National Front, government coalition parties) Zambry Abdul Kadir is not the legitimate chief Minister of Perak, justice Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahim then proclaimed the ousted *Pakatan Rakyat Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin as the rightful Perak’s chief Minister.

Beside that, from 5 by-elections after 12th general election, BN lost 4 by-election to Pakatan rakyat. The analysis showed the numbers of voters who voted for Pakatan Rakyat increased obviously compared to 12th general election. Another by-election scheduled on 31 May 2009 following the resignation of Deputy Chief Minister of Penang state. Najib said that’s not a good time for by-election in this time of economic crisis. Do you thing Najib’s making a virtue out of trepidation that if BN enters the fray, its record would extend to 0-5 in the peninsular of Malaysia?

Who is Najib? Fyi, Najib was the son of Malaysian 2nd prime minister, Abdul Razak who was implicated to the May 13 1969 racial riots in Malaysia. The book written by Kua Kia Soong who was arrested under the ISA during “Operation Lalang” in 1987 for 445 days. Upon released in 1989, he helped to found SUARAM, which is the leading human rights NGO in Malaysia today. He is still a director of SUARAM.

In his analysis, the may 13 1969 racial riots in Malaysia were by no means a spontaneous outburst of racial violence in a multi-ethnic society – these declassified documents clearly show that there was a plan to unleash this racial violence. The “May 13 Incident” was a coup d’etat by the then emergent Malay state capitalist class to depose the Tunku Abdul Rahman (Malaysian 1st prime minister) who represented the outdated malay aristocracy. It was a critical political putsch which changed the course of Malaysian political history and ensured the rise and entrenchment of the new Malay capitalist class through the New Ecomonic Policy.

At the International level, Najib became more notorious as he is implicated in the murder of Shaariibuugiin Altantuyaa in Malaysia. I’m sure, Sarull from Mongolia should know it.

Everybody was worried of what will happen after Dato’ Seri Najib takes the helm as the prime minister.

Anyway below is part of my sharing on political situation in Malaysia. With lots of drama and unexpected thing occurred since the 12th general election. I can feel lots changing coming on. The only thing that does not change is, I am still single and available. :( too bad!

As what had promised on my previous sharing, I plan to conduct training from what had learnt from CO course. And we (SUARAM JOHOR BAHRU branch) had conducted a Humanity Camp on 1st May to 3rd May. Program as below: -

- field visit (May Day celebration) ;
- session one: The meaning of life (resource person: Goh Kian Seng- principle of confusion private secondary school);
- session two: The spirit of University (resource person : Ng Yap Hwa – Personal Assistant of MP Charles Santiago);
- session three: sex and gender equality (resource person : Ho Yoke Lin from women’s action society -AWAM);
- session four: Human Rights – equality rights (person in charge : Nyam Kee Han);
- special session (visit Kua Kia Soong- sharing on his experiences and commitments in Malaysia Chinese education movement as he is English educated).

19 participants from different universities and a client of SUARAM JB’s Human Rights Service Center attended the camp. I am responsible on session four: Human Rights – equality rights. Beside that, I am also responsible for energizing games where I used a game learnt from CO course. Do you remember the game conducted by Lulu (Lets sing together 123) ;(Eat Banana) conducted by Hassan and (shake your body) conducted by Myo? Do you know, I facilitated with much memorable. With sexy body shape, monkey come out, scratching others head from behind and etc. and many game come to my mind while conducting or facilitating the game.

You know how I conducted my session? Before that I must ask Paul, do you watch (Slumdog Millionaire)? Haha… I used the idea from the movie to set my questions which is related to Human Rights or equality. I divided my session into 3 parts. Questions of part one basically are questions based on knowledge; Part two is controversial issue and Part three is Bonus question. The groups who get the highest mark can go into part two’s questions. And each of them can choose to answer bonus question to get more marks to counter others group. The most difficult part that made me headache is to create the question which all the objective answers can give an inputs to participants. Besides fighting to get higher marks, I also want them to get input on each of the objective answer.

From the evaluation, I found that they enjoyed the session. But they also feel boring because some of the questions have no proper answer. You know why? I actually specially created them to make them discuss on it. Haha…anywhere, they are right because the game itself created to make them fight to get higher mark to become a millionaire. If no proper answer, fighting spirit among them decrease naturally. Anywhere, we must learn from experience. We also feel that the way of conducting it was creative and may be used next time. CO must be creative, mustn’t it?

• Note: Pakatan Rakyat or PR (English: People's Pact/People's Alliance) was established on April 1, 2008. The political coalition comprises a group of Malaysian political parties, namely, the People's Justice Party (PKR), Democratic Action Party (DAP), and Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS), who collectively worked together as the Barisan Rakyat (or People's Front) during the 12th Malaysian general election in 2008.
